Mastigoteuthidae is the family of whip lash squid. This is the dominant squid family in the bathypelagic and has an incomplete, hotly debated, and challenging taxonomy. Specimens are often damaged during capture making them difficult to identify. As well, most of the taxonomy has been based on juvenile and sub-adult specimens.
